“First of all, everyone dances,” says Dr. Lyle. “Social dance is a social movement that involves both the groups, and also individuals within the groups.”
What’s more, Lyle explained, when you “dance around people while they are dancing,” you’re making their actions more personal and intimate, and that creates more intimacy. Dancing around a group creates “a relationship of people going together.”
Additionally, she said, social dancing “emphasizes socialization, where people do not just talk, but also dance in that way, and dance with each other, and dance with the music.” And, she said, dancing with others is more about a shared experience.
“So if you take dancing outside of groups,” explained Lyle, “you’ve already altered the socialization that you’re doing, so you’re making it a more intimate kind of experience.”
How do I find out if someone is dancing around me?
Dr. Lyle said she recommends calling out “shares” that she’s dancing around: “Shares” are the people she’s dancing around, and sharing them might let you find out what they’re dancing about, like who they are, and where they’re from. And the more often you look for shared dances on dance-listservs, the more likely it is that you’ll find them, she says.
Some social clubs have websites, like www.dancepulse.com, which has listservs for groups and dances every other night of the week, says Jennifer Wills.
Wills, a co-owner of the Baltimore dance-club Dance Pulse, says that most of the people who come to dance-listservs are members of her club. So when she finds someone on a listserv, she asks the question: do they dance with others?
Wills says she does it for people who are not “really outgoing,” and “who are in very small groups,” so she doesn’t find them dancing to a full band or a rockin’ band, but rather “a couple of friends.” She also asks if her friends want to dance together, like she might ask if a couple wants to dance together at a birthday party.
