In general, people in a dance ensemble are free to dance as long as the ensemble is safe. It is generally illegal to initiate a violent confrontation, and in certain cases, no further violence is condoned if a dance partner feels threatened. In practice, it is also considered safer to avoid conflict (or even to do nothing) and instead to just be yourself.
What is a “dance” in the context of dance school music?
We believe that dance music, along with its various permutations, is an integral part of any program of professional music training. Many other music styles, such as rock, rap, jazz, and classical, are more appropriate for those of us practicing in dance music rather than classical music. For more information on dance music, see our guide to dance music.
What is “dance music education” and how is it different from “music therapy” in music education?
Dance music teacher education is based on classical music theory, with special emphasis on dance music. It is therefore considered to be a “dance music” style by the AAMC, and an integral part of the educational experience. Many music instructors are also dancers themselves, which makes it possible for instructors to discuss music theory while their students become dancers. Some dance instruction programs also include instrumental, ensemble, and/or group dancing as part of the training.
Does every dance music teacher have to be a dancer?
Most dance music teacher education programs are founded by dance music enthusiasts who are able to incorporate the best of what we are learning from dance music into their instruction. It is not required of a dance music teacher to become a dancer, as some instructors choose not to, and others will use the dance music to teach other dance music techniques. Some teachers, including dance music teachers, do not have dance experience, but they are often able to teach techniques in dance music that are not appropriate for other teachers.
Does a dance school use music?
Dance music is used mostly in dance instruction, but in some cases instructors will use instrumental, ensemble, and/or group dance. Also, some dance music instructors use dance music as a component for a course in composition (as opposed to dance theory).
Is all music, including dance music, taught in an AAMC-sanctioned program?
