I think they’re the three elements, the way they play out, in and of themselves. If we just had an unstructured, spontaneous act of dance, you wouldn’t need to go through those three and say what they are for.
So one of the challenges is the choreographers will have a dance in which the dancers are moving in various ways in multiple dimensions, different directions. So from our perspective, we want that. So we want to understand the complexity of what is being done. But then you have to understand the dance and its structure and your relationship to it.
But on the other side of it, if you get into the very hard stuff and you have to have the choreographers think hard to understand the details of how certain dancers move in multiple directions, there’s a lot of work involved. So we want to respect the dance and make sure that the choreographers get the full value out of it in terms of the dance. Otherwise, it becomes a choreography project.
So it’s a balancing act between the dance designer and the composer.
B: So when we think about music, we think of music as being all about the composer. And I was thinking, given that you guys wrote the score for The Force Awakens, you guys wrote the score to a bunch of movies. It seems like there’s another layer to it, the composers and orchestras and everything else. But it’s not like a very complicated dance around the music. Do you use more orchestral or vocal orchestral compositions in general?
K: Well, that’s really interesting, isn’t it? You just go into a film and just use the best music that you get and the actors that you have around, but you also have to consider the film. So in the case of The Force Awakens, we are using the music that we would be used to using in a Star Wars film – kind of an R-rated film. So we are doing that in the context of that context, and with the kind of music we want to use. And we are still making sure that we are using it with the kind of integrity and the tone where you can feel the emotion, but at the same time you know there is a level of freedom and flexibility that we feel will make it feel more real.
So for Star Wars fans, who are really going to be able to get excited by Star Wars music, it’s really nice to have the option of getting that.
