“At the most basic level, art is performance. Dance is a form of speech, a language, to some extent an artform that is performed. The art has two components:
the dancer who gives his or her body to the performance.
the audience who gives their reaction to the performance.
“By the late 19th and early 20th centuries there was a shift from dance and music to cinema and opera. The dancers in those theatres were often cast as prostitutes. For a long time opera became just a vehicle to promote the male body and to sell sexual power.”
The male body.
If the word “masculine” means something other than the sexual organs that are being performed, then the word “femininity” implies that the sexual organs are not what is being considered “masculine” but something to be despised.
Couple dances
According to the BBC,: “The male was often played by one person, usually a dancer or a male model or actor, and the female performed by a partner. Sometimes it was a male and a female.”
Why are male dancers the main protagonists?
“It might have started as a result of the Victorian and Edwardian society’s desire to show women as beautiful and ‘pure’, ‘virgin’ and ‘pure’ – as objects rather than as individuals,” says Dr Tom Dickson, an evolutionary anthropologist from the Institute of Evolutionary Anthropology.
“But the most likely theory is that male playmaking was also a kind of performance which promoted male survival.”
The women of dance
Dr Dickson says that the men who are most important dancers include “the leading female players”:
“The male dancers include one or two dancers from the ensemble, such as a troupier, soloist or female voice. The leading male players are typically two to three men.
In the male ensemble there are often only young young men playing.”
It is important to point out that, while male dancers are always more popular with women, and there are only two male players in male ensemble in the ballet company, there are eight female dancers and all of them lead male artists as principal dancers.
Dr Dickson believes that it is a male identity: being “masculine” in ballet is a means to the end. “It’s a form of masculine dominance,” he says.
