Well, I should say that when you talk to people who are performing dance, they tell you that there’s no single class. You have to understand that every dancer who uses the word “class” is actually making a distinction between choreographs or genres and social dance.
I think the most important distinction is between performance and “class.” For dancers doing dance for dance purposes, performing is in some ways, the same thing as performance. Dance performance is not just going out there and taking a performance in that dance category—it’s a whole new way of looking at choreography and how it relates to people. And so to dance, if you’re doing the performance part (like singing), and you get to the “class” part, where it’s like: “Let’s take our song, let’s look at each of our steps, let’s look at the dynamic between those steps,” that’s more art than dance. That’s art, and it’s the way that those two forms of performing art are meant to be. But just as I’m just trying to take a performance and make it into a dance, I’m also trying to take a performance and make it into another form of art. The whole point is that there is a distinction between those two forms of performing art.
How is social dance different from performance?
It’s basically doing dance. In performance, a big component is performance. You have a specific person, you have props, you have a choreographer, and you have time and space and all this different things. And that’s where I think what makes performance so different from social dance is that performance is done in the moment: it’s based more on emotion and memory than on performance.
And there’s also this aspect of it—I don’t think social dance is about performing in any capacity where people get to feel what the dance is about and see the dancers in the act. You don’t have the luxury of doing performances of the same song that somebody else is doing. You have to improvise within the context of the choreography.
What makes social dance “class”?
It’s kind of an umbrella term. That’s why the word “class,” it’s also not just one thing. Everyone agrees that there’s a certain aspect of social dance, particularly in the European countries, that you need an “elaborated education” to be able to do. And I think that makes it special.
