The city of San Mateo had its first “sanctuary for immigrants” on January 16. The move came at a time when undocumented immigrants, mostly from Central America, were being threatened with deportation by some Republican governors. San Mateo’s board of supervisors and mayor unanimously voted in favor of the measure, which protects the rights of people who are in the country illegally and who are not protected by the state of California law.
San Mateo’s new sanctuary is the first of five to be established by other cities in the Los Angeles area.
The legislation passed unanimously by the San Mateo board of supervisors comes in response to President Trump’s announcement to make some federal dollars available to sanctuary cities like San Francisco.
Sanfago is one of a number of cities in California that have said they will withhold funds if sanctuary city policies are allowed to go unchallenged.
S.F. officials have already taken a series of other actions in response to President Trump’s executive orders. That includes:
-Enrolling non-citizens in the city’s existing “fraud prevention unit” that is assigned to work on citywide criminal cases in order prevent fraud committed by anyone on city premises.
-Ensuring that city employees are trained to know the law when dealing with the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), and to report suspected criminal activity to that agency (this comes after a city council meeting in December, where members voted to make local government aware of “sanctuary city” policies.
And,
-Notifying immigration agents that law enforcement employees are unauthorized immigrants.
For San Francisco, sanctuary city legislation passed in March is intended to stop the city from enforcing federal immigration laws through executive actions or other forms of legal entanglement. Such measures aim to protect illegal immigrants or individuals in the country illegally who are in the country illegally. According to the California Board of Equalization, sanctuary city laws often result in less state and local cooperation.
