A Florida man pleaded guilty today to running guns to Mexico, and he had his first criminal trial.
Jason Wayne Miller, who’s also a U.S. citizen, pleaded guilty earlier this month to conspiring to facilitate the transportation, sale, and possession of prohibited items by Mexican nationals in the United States.
Miller allegedly traveled from Florida to San Diego to meet a man he didn’t know and provide him with firearms and ammunition. The two then began plotting the murder of an American and “make it look like a drug deal gone bad,” according to the federal indictment.
His co-conspirator later allegedly agreed to carry out this crime.
When they arrived in Mexico on the night of Jan. 7, they were not permitted to carry a weapon. Miller told them, ‘I’m from the States, I’m just here to buy your guns,’ says U.S. Attorney Melinda Haag.
At that point, they moved closer to the gun store and started talking about killing someone, says U.S. Attorney Haag. But by then, they were at the gun shop for just an hour. The gun-dealer eventually gave them his business card to be taken home with them.
It was while Miller and his associate were inside talking about the business opportunity they’d been given that the other conspirator decided to get the guns they were to buy.
While on their way out of the gun shop, the conspirator fired at them. Miller returned fire, saying he had his gun on him and was ready to fight. But the conspirator had his gun by his side, so Miller surrendered.
Later, Miller was handcuffed, and the conspirator ran away.
