Its products are innovative and, as the world’s most valuable firm, it can afford to be so.
But Apple hasn’t yet come up with the best way to communicate those claims to the public. A new ad from “The Voice” features seven different ways to communicate innovation. The first two use a new form of adware, “Adsbylion”, which has been around since 2003. The third is a brand-new tool that allows you to buy a new ad for less than the price of the first ad. A third gives you a new way for companies to tell users how much money they’re spending, and a fourth has you buy an original movie soundtrack for free, to support independent films. All three of these are free.
“The Voice” is the second major Apple ad campaign in the last year. The first, called “Adventures in Creativity”, launched in 2014 and promised a “surprising revelation from your ad. It’s never been so much fun.” (A few weeks later, the campaign was pulled after a few days). The previous, “The World”, told a story of a young musician named Kevin Murphy, who became a musician at age 19 after suffering a series of musical difficulties. He played a lot of guitar-style music but in the end decided to focus on electronic dance music, and “The World” was all about his journey to find his sound.
If none of these approaches were compelling enough, the campaign was only made possible by the fact that Apple doesn’t seem bothered by the idea that it’s trying to be innovative or interesting. A few years ago, Apple would’ve had to tell a completely different story of what kind of innovation the technology they were pushing was trying to create. Now, because you can do that stuff on your iPhone, even Apple doesn’t care to tell its own story.
