Where did social dance originated? – History Of Social Dances Pptv

There are no concrete answers to this question, just as there are no straightforward answers to those about the origins of the great musical instruments.

The origins of the modern dance scene in Scotland, especially, probably arose by chance. Many years previously some people, perhaps in Edinburgh, started doing ‘waltz-like’ movements, dancing around a table and in front of the camera. When a dancer got bored with these repetitions he went to a local club for dancing. This gave rise to a popular movement with its own style and names. Some of the dances were called ‘clowning’, ‘carpentry’, ‘pony dancing’, ‘spare the rod’. The idea of a dance was invented; then the dancer went as far as to invent his own names. At this point some people, perhaps having been influenced by the dance movement, decided to name a particular dance after himself! This made that dance popular, not only across society but outside also. This idea persisted until, in the 1880s, it was discovered, by accident, that the name ‘spare the rod’ was actually a pun on ‘spare the rod of the cock’. At the same time, some of the other movements were given names which were completely new.

The dances now known as ‘dance-movements’ have been going on across Scotland for many years. Some are called ‘dance-songs’, some ‘dance-nights’ and some are ‘dance-travestas’ but to no one’s surprise there is a distinct group of very different dances which continue for years. What the ‘dance-songs’ and ‘dance-travestas’ are all about I will explain in the next paragraphs. But I also want to point out one very common characteristic: all dances are all dances. But when it comes to ‘dancing, there are no rules and everyone has their own rules. People with large and colourful costumes, a good dance partner and the right words seem to be all that people need. I can only say this at the outset: as much as I have enjoyed watching these dances, I am convinced that they are a very fine product. It is an excellent combination of dancing, dancing the right way, good song choices, and the right colours and the right costumes. But there must be other dances. But there are no rules! There is no such thing as a dance-movement because all of the dances I have written about are dances! There
