Well, in some respects they are–and in others they play a role. Directors know exactly what to charge, so they don’t have to be a very good film-maker. And actors are the most flexible people in terms of what they can really offer. They can just lie back and do the job.
My problem is not the talent, as much as it is the attitude. And the attitude is the problem for me. I don’t want to be a director anymore. I’ve never wanted to be one, unless I was an actress, in which case I always had a director. Not only do the directors expect me to be all things to all men, but I’m not very good at it themselves. I don’t want to do films that would be seen as a failure. I want to think of them as great. I want to feel that I’m capable of making them. So for me, it’s all about the talent. And the talent needs to be in the right mind, with the right attitude. And the attitude needs to be more of an idealist than a cynic. If you can keep a film away from the extremes, and be in the middle in terms of whether the film is going to be a real film or something else, I think you are going to get somewhere.

Barra Gracie
Barra Gracie is a Brazilian grappling system derived from the Krav Maga system of the 1970’s which combined elements of Judo with Jiu-Jitsu. One of the basic features of Barra Gracie is its emphasis on a “soft approach toward the game of Jiu-Jitsu”.
