No, not at all. You’ve never heard of a Film Study course, but don’t worry – for many of us that’s not the case. You simply need to get your hands on the knowledge of film, and then you can go right ahead.
You’ll need:
– a camera, preferably a professional (expensive) one, preferably high quality
– a camera timer that will allow you to stop the film when you’re finished shooting or start again when you’ve started (so you can stop the film when you’re shooting when you are taking photos, or start it while you’re shooting something else)
– a reel of film (not a roll of film) or something similar
– a good lens and a couple of frames of film ready to use (or just to take pictures on)
– some patience (you’ll probably be using a digital body first)
– film
– a black light or flash or both available for filming – if you want more details about this please check out our tips on using a flash.
Note that in addition to being able to shoot without shooting for the most part you will need to practice some other skills too: how to deal with the weather for example, how to avoid dust or the like …

How to learn to do it right
You don’t need to take up a new subject, or shoot your favourite actors – the more you do it, the more effective it will be.
There aren’t any rules about the camera type or how it’s set up, it’s really your own responsibility to make it work for you. And yes, even without getting to see your subjects beforehand when you go to film school, most will find their way to the camera.
We’ve put together this video as a guide to make learning how to do this as easy as possible… you can download it as a single file here, or you can have a look at our sample film and use it as a guide.
In addition to getting a camera, we’ve also put together the following films to get you started, all to help you improve your technique and get all the basics down, and as a bonus we’ve included a film tutorial on using a simple flash (although some of you might find taking flashes easier with some lenses, and others it might do what you don’t, not all of the time).
