My brother is a writer and a professional actor. So when I joined him and I got involved in the industry, I was able to have a lot of fun with it and learn a lot more. I wasn’t trying to be a film director but I was really interested in making movies, and I got very involved with the industry, and it was fun.
It was a really enjoyable experience. I had the opportunity to meet really great directors at Cannes, that gave me a lot of confidence. It was like a great experience.
So what happens after you become a filmmaker?
They kind of look at you and say, “What do you think we want to make? What do you want to do? Go ahead and do it. We really really like it.” There’s the opportunity to make more movies. If you decide to go and make more movies, you probably go and make more shorts. People think I have a long-term goal of making shorts… or maybe it’s to make feature films one day, and one of my dreams is to make a feature film, but I have no idea what that would look like yet, so I don’t know if they are open to the idea of more movies.
There is an assumption that the film community has become more professional and it’s become really easy for anyone to make a good movie. But the reality is, as long as you’re willing to invest and be committed to trying to make a film, you are going to be able to make good movies.
You say you’re open to the idea of directing the next Big Hero 6 movie. How are you going to keep yourself motivated?
I would like to be an actor. I’m not in the position where I have to make money for myself and then my family. There are so many talented people, especially in America, that can make good money making films, and not need to put any more money into their careers, or they’re not doing things that other people think they should be doing. I have a lot of talent, and maybe, if I would be more active with that, then maybe that would help me get money.
It’s one thing to have money and a good career. The other thing is to have an honest connection to the work you’re doing, that doesn’t feel like a chore and that really engages with people who see it. A lot of times, we’ll see people on social media, and on forums, who say,
