What is a filmmaker. A Director. A Producer. A Writer. A Cinematographer? No. A camera operator, or a person who knows a lot about camera.
A videographer is a person who specializes in camera. They are people that have been trained to shoot movies and do stuff with cameras. A lot of these people do freelance work, editing, and writing. These are very diverse areas and we get lots of requests from people with more than one of those.
But what we all have in common is we want to be able to go out onto the floor with whatever we want, and shoot wherever we want. And not have to worry about money. That part is very important to us so having all these different things gives everyone a little more freedom. You want freedom in what you’re doing and also not have to worry about money.
We all know that being a director isn’t glamorous after all, but we all have something to add.
When you’re out in front of the camera, what is the first thing you want to do and what kind of thing would you do if you weren’t a videographer?
First and foremost? Get the shot.
Anything about the gear? Like how many lenses and equipment would you buy into?
I just shoot with the most inexpensive camera I can get. I’ll buy the cheapest lens I can afford. A little under $200. That is for my first camera I’ll put a cheap Canon 5d Mark II outfitted with a Zeiss Tele Zuiko 35-70 lenses. I get lots at yard sales. There are a few Zeiss lenses there. A Zeiss 105 is in good condition that I have.
But if i’m doing a movie for a film school, my first camera I would buy the most expensive. I’d probably go up to the Zeiss or an Canon and probably a full 35mm focal length. I’d get a full range. That’s where the majority of the camera I shoot now comes from.
The next thing I’d want to know is the lens size, and if that would be larger or smaller? Then, if I wanted to buy into the manual focus, like an electronic focus where I can have it automatically set to focus on my subject from that distance. Or something with a lens distance, if I wanted to go up to infinity. I would want to do that first and also know a little bit more about how the camera really works
