Does the average independent film film have the same financial success as a studio’s film? Are indie films making the same amount of money as standard feature films? I believe we have seen a big shift in the way movies are funded, and I am here to tell you it is a big step up for the genre.
Let’s not forget that the big studios are the ones that fund most film and there are very few independent filmmakers making the financial jump this past year. It seems the studios have the power to dictate the quality of their films, and that they have not yet learned to respect and support independent filmmaker. With this in mind, how does what you put on your screen affect the overall success of your film?
I remember reading about indie director James Ivory and my jaw actually hit the floor when I read the articles about how he was trying to raise money for one production. We didn’t realize how much of an impact a film has on an audience until we have seen it in the theater and even then, sometimes the effects aren’t quite as dramatic as we hoped.
I am going to go into the reasons why I think the indie film paradigm is growing and the steps you can take to support your film. The last 3 years I have gotten together 4 of the top 5 international filmmakers from all over the world, and have been doing our best to help them with our distribution process. We have partnered with independent labels and we have created a platform for them to reach international audiences and help bring their content to global audiences. I think this is going to be a big deal and will change the way movies are funded.
I wish I could answer all of the follow up questions, but I will end with one of my own. How do you make sure your audience is happy when they go to see your films? I am really lucky in that I get to help create a world that is so enjoyable to me. At the end of the day, the movie theater experience shouldn’t feel like a place where I have to ask, “Do you realize you might like this movie?” If you’re going to watch this movie, you should have an incredible time and enjoy yourself like we all did before we even made it to the theaters. The most important thing to do on that front is to provide a fun experience for your audience while they are watching your film. To my own way of thinking, I have taken great measures to make sure that is done and that I can enjoy the experience without worrying about how other people will feel
