I don’t think I need a college degree to be a filmmaker, and I don’t think a film degree is necessary, but I just felt the time was right for me. I went up to L.A. and had a lot of fun. I did the three seasons, but I think it will be like four if I’m not getting too many offers over the course of this.”
Was you able to gain some understanding of the business side of filmmaking from the experience?
No, I had no idea as much as anyone else about the business side of filmmaking. But there are ways to use the information you have learned for your next film. For the first two seasons, I spent a lot of time shooting and editing my own commercials. I did that, and I learned a lot about how to be a producer and how to work with clients and distributors. For a new actor, an actor, the main way would be to go and audition for a production company and get paid for my time. I learned about how to negotiate with them. And you learn the names of the companies as well, which is really cool.
What was the hardest thing about being a filmmaker?
Working really long hours at work at 10 a.m., 11 a.m. for three months straight. That was really hard. It made me question everything I was doing—everything. It was a really fun opportunity for me because my family was at home when I got there, but I also had to try to do the same as them.
And did there come a time when you took a break from filmmaking?
I had some things that didn’t work out until I had more time to sort things out in my own life. That was one, but I think it was something I just wasn’t able to figure out. And it’s more of a conscious decision for sure—to not jump back in and get more people involved.
Did anything from watching “Game of Thrones” on HBO or “Lost” on HBO come to mind while you were planning your “American Horror Story” run?
There’s one moment from “Game of Thrones” that stands out. I’m getting this message from this guy named Eddard Stark at the end of the episode. We were on the beach and Eddard was just this character that they never made it work, and he is just talking about being frustrated and just wanting to find a new family. So he’s like, “My
