I think that when we talk about filmmaking we’re talking about people with an emotional connection to a story. Most of us, like I say, don’t have one. However, I think it’s fair to say that in certain parts of the US right now, a lot of us do have one, and for many reasons. I have been asked a million times what’s an actor to do. I’ve been told a million times that it’s about putting yourself in the shoes of the character. I find it a lot more interesting to understand the personal lives of the protagonists in the story because this makes you a human being, even if you are in your role. It’s not always about action or explosions. Sometimes it’s about relationships. It’s less about the action; you’re less concerned about fighting. I think it’s less about the action and more about how the characters relate to each other.
Is there a difference between directing and being an actor?
I think being an actor is about relationships and making those connections, but I don’t think directing is more or less about a story than acting. I think it works both ways. There’s no shortage of material. I’ve got no shortage of material, and I do things that I normally don’t do. It just depends upon what I can do with it.
Which films are your favourites, and why?
There’s just about every film of any genre I could ever want to watch. I’m kind of a movie snob. When I watch a film, I’ve got to love some of the acting, I’ve got to love some of the costumes, I’ve got to love all the things in the way that I’m told, whether that’s costumes, sets, props and costumes. This is all for a good cause and that’s all that counts.
If you weren’t an actor and were just a writer or a director, what would you be up to?
That’s a hard question. When you start out with something that isn’t you, you don’t take it as serious as working with others would. So, the thing that I would love to do is write for television, I would love to direct a short, I would love to work with music as I work with a lot of music that makes films. Music is so much different from film. If you look at the work of the Beatles the difference in songs is amazing. I do think maybe it would be interesting to do a film with
