Are there more female screenwriters?
Oh, I don’t know. It can go either way. I’d love to know exactly; just don’t judge me. I mean, I was always interested in getting to a certain point in the film that I wanted, but I don’t know if that’s necessarily a realistic goal. It could be the opposite if I go for it! I have a lot of film that I’m not sure I’ll do. I’d love to be a director.
I know you’re a big fan of directors that create with actors. Do you want to direct someone?
Oh, hell yeah!

I don’t know that he would be available right now, but what would you want to direct?
I think a lot of really well-written stories, where I really, really appreciate writing about them, are not necessarily available as screenplays. I would love to do a movie or TV show like that. There’s also a book about one of those movies, but that’s only available as a graphic novel.
How much of a part does the work really play in your life? How would you like to be remembered?
There are definitely a lot of stories I would like to do, that aren’t necessarily available to me as screenplays. That’s one of my goals. When I’m not able to play around with writing, I would like to have someone come up with something that I’m more comfortable with. I was really interested in doing a project about [the actor] Robert Downey Jr., who’s in a lot of great movies, but not necessarily in them as screenplays. I just realized after the script was done that he wanted to direct it, and I was like “What are you going to have that do for you?” When he wasn’t in the movie, I would have loved to just have a few weeks with him on the other side of his life, and be able to have some really fun times.
You have a couple of upcoming projects that have you back in character. How does that inform your writing? What other aspects of your real life give you an excuse to do that?
This spring, I’m doing a play called “The Secret.” It’s a very personal play for my girlfriend, and I got so much out of doing it that I’m going to put it in a book somewhere I think that’s going to be really
