You can make a documentary by yourself, by working out of a spare bedroom or other safe space. However, filmmaking is a big deal and you need to know an awful lot about what you’re good at and how to do it.
Some directors and storytellers like to work as part of a team, as they get a real feel about someone’s abilities and abilities of a single person, so they can know if they’re on the right track with that person. They learn to get comfortable with their work and develop a team around them. Another thing to do is try out a variety of different subjects and genres. Some people like to do short films about the city they grew up in, others like to tell stories about an era in their life, something historical is definitely up their street.
What are my career goals?
As long as the subject matter and the creative vision are something you really care about, you’ll find that you want to make a lot of films. A film is always something you want to do—to see something you love become a reality. Some people go on to work as filmmakers full-time, while others only become a full-time filmmaker after getting bored of the hobby. Either way, though, your desire to explore different subjects and situations is what’s driving you out of your comfort zone as an amateur filmmaker.
When you’re finally finding your niche, get on board with the filmmaking community, whether it’s Twitter, Facebook, or YouTube. Get involved with film festivals around the world, even try to get involved with festivals that aren’t just about films at all, and make connections. Even just a friendly interaction can be the start of having fun on the set of your next piece.
Lastly, get to know the people in your field. There are hundreds of them out there doing amazing work. As you find these people, become more and more familiar with their work and find ways to share with them as much as possible. These connections have been so invaluable for me, and I can’t even speak highly enough of what they’ve done for me.
