Directing is the process of directing, directing, and directing another person by putting yourself in their shoes. If your main focus is “getting to know yourself,” then doing a basic introduction to the world of directing and teaching is the least important part.
Let your mind wander into the world of directing. Imagine yourself as a director or a teacher, walking through your neighborhood, doing your business. You can’t sit around with your computer all day staring at the screen trying to think of things to say. So imagine walking around your neighborhood talking with a few people you know and learning from them.
What inspires you as a filmmaker? Can you share an example or comment on another filmmaker who has inspired you?
This question isn’t to say that directing is something you’re born with or something you need to do! But, you have to work hard enough at it that if you get frustrated, you can figure it out. The other thing that inspires me is watching other people go through the process, whether they live on a different coast or are more remote from you in some ways. It’s like watching an old fashioned film club meet. I like watching that and seeing when people have real success making movies.
What is your biggest fear as a filmmaker?
There’s a lot of fear in this film industry but it’s actually not fear at all, it’s just insecurity. I’m lucky in that I don’t have any worries that drive me nuts. But I also don’t have a lot of other fears or aspirations and no one worries about me driving them crazy. The fear of being a failure as a filmmaker is never something that goes away so I just have to move forward. I try to do my best, every single day, and I hope that others can as well.
What’s your dream project?
I feel like I’m at the point where I can start to think about something. I’m just excited to see where it goes and do as much as I can with it because I know I can improve with any project. I always have and I think I could use that.
What’s the best thing about living in NYC?
I wouldn’t say it’s the best thing, but it’s just the most enjoyable place to live. I’ve always loved the food; the food is incredible and I’m proud to have the same friends I’ve had for many years. So I can’t help but be grateful to be where I am.
