A recent interview is worth a thousand words. This one about the making of “The Wolfpack” (starring Jon Favreau and Daniel Kaluuya):
I’ve been doing this a long time, and it’s not even funny. This is not the money-making kind of movie. This is making a film and trying to create stories with a bunch of interesting characters and a lot of fun. And I feel like that’s the kind of thing you really love to do. You love to be able to make a movie — and the reason you’ve gotten to the point you can make a movie is you love to tell fun stories, and you have very specific things on your mind. (laughs) You can’t get out of the fact that you love being able to use your imagination and make up stories in your head and tell them like something else.
I’ve heard people talk about how they’ve made about $150 or more per hour with a film. That’s not quite a million, but if I were a professional director, that would get me into a very rich place.
If that’s my approach and I’m successful enough at that, and I get $150,000, that’s $200,000 for the year.
The money is not a priority.

If you had to make three features a year, what would you want to change, what would you have to work on? And how many is too much?
I’ll admit that I like the idea of three — it’s kind of weird trying to juggle that idea — and I know that there are people who are able to just do one or two movies a year. And we’re all in that situation.
If I had three movies a year, I’d want to do a little bit of everything, so I could make the movies I want to see. And I don’t think, for me, one or two a year means anything.
Are there any other films that you would love to work on but can’t do now because of scheduling? What do you want to develop out of that time?
I would really like to make the movie “Velvet Goldmine” this year, but it’s not happening. So, I really want to make the movies I want to make — and you know, what’s next?”
