If you’re good at these questions that answer the question, your future movie could be more than you expected. If no one questions this, the chances of getting that kind of contract or project may be minimal. If the company is in some kind of red or blue slump, asking to direct a comedy may not be a bad idea, because then you’re not as much of an “expert” as people would expect.
There are a host of other things that can help you make the most out of directing a film – the business side is also well covered – but just ask yourself the big questions: “Would I do it this way?” and “Do I need more money than I have now?”
And you know what? You probably don’t need more money than you have now, just because the odds are not really against you. Just because that movie you’ve been working on doesn’t have legs and you are too small to get it made – don’t let the market deter you.
I’ll always tell people to “go for it” if they have a question but to ask it in a way that doesn’t scare them off. I’ve had clients tell me that they feel intimidated because they don’t really know their market so they start by calling in an ex-producer and asking if he knows anyone who might be up for a project. That didn’t work so well and the director turned his film down, so I’ve advised him to not bother.
One common problem is that directors are intimidated by the concept of risk. While I am not going to lie and say that I am a risk taker, I do recognize that there are things that can go wrong that are not in my control and for the most part the industry is filled with filmmakers who either have no experience with the business, or are scared by the thought of getting on the wrong side of the company that they are working for.
The other side of the coin is to think about what you are doing and how you feel about it. Some people don’t really like acting. And some people prefer the company that they are working for. I think it’s possible to do both and it’s just a matter of finding that happy medium. For whatever reason you get what you get and what you have been working with for the past is not going to be a big deal.
