I don’t think they have it. For a couple of decades now, the biggest source of money in film and television has been the television studio and their executives. The biggest money maker for a filmmaker — the one you spend the most time and effort on — is the TV series (or a movie) you make. It’s a big percentage of all profits, and it’s the one I can think of off the top of my head. But I’m not making big television series and hoping they come back, and I’ve never even made one.
And then there’s the fact that no studios actually produce TV series. So if you want to make movies, you work with one or two, and maybe 10 of them make a bunch of money. And some of those are just really hard to make, because a camera has to be made, and there have got to be characters in it.
So there’s the industry itself I’ve never heard of. And then there’s my favorite category: the indie.
What’s an indie doing these days?
Now we have this thing where all major movie studios are basically the same thing, and indie films are their own thing. The indie has to be smaller, and they have to be made by themselves. The independent is like a startup, but they actually have to make all the marketing, and they have to be the ones in charge of their own marketing of their movies and merchandise—you know, the biggest brands of all are independent, but you don’t know it until you’re in an independent movie, whereas if you’re working with a big studio or a major studio, you’re in a big studio or a big corporation. So the indie can be any size you want, but they have to make all the money themselves. That’s probably the biggest difference between this world and the big one.
I’ve heard that there are studios or directors they like making indie movies, but they’re very rare.
I wouldn’t say I’ve heard of anyone working on one of them, but there still are. There have been a few people.
Did you know that, before you started shooting Super Bowl XLVIII this year?
I didn’t really — I was just, I love to go to shows and see the people that are working on the film, because it gives me a better sense of how it’s going to turn out. I’m like a little kid, so I’m obsessed with them.
