As a producer, it depends on the director. In a film, you have your director of photography, who is a writer, who is another writer, you have your composer, which is a writer who is a director of photography. In a video game you’ll have the director of graphics, another writer, director of music, you have the director of audio, another writer, you have the director of production, a programmer, as well as other members that help, as an example, the voice actor for the character. The producer doesn’t need to be a director. However, if you need to hire someone, it’s advisable to have someone that is really talented, with experience, who can really help you. That’s why it’s better if the producer and the director are from the same company. They have good experience to get the jobs done by the production.
What happens in the production?
During the production, you can’t see all the production meetings. You will only get to see an outline of the production. For some producers it might be 10 or 12 people working. If it’s 20-30 people, then they need to sit in the meeting room and you can’t see any of the other sessions. However, you can ask how they’re doing, and if their meetings were very efficient. I mean, how many people were there? And, what were those meetings like? What did each person have to say?
That’s what I was doing back in 2011-2012. A year or two ago I was talking to some of my producer friends, and they said “Oh, by the way, how you do that? I mean it is pretty straightforward from where you are and what you need.” In most cases, it’s just about finding a good person, and getting them to talk to you. Usually, we will talk with them a few times before we choose a manager/manager of the production team. Then, it’s the same meeting with the manager. After those 5-7 meetings, I’m going to make a decision regarding the contract, for the amount and for the duration and for all those other things that are specific to each person. If they have a good relationship with me, then I’ll sign the contract.
