There are always exceptions to every rule, and there are many opportunities in film industry to get a college degree. Most film schools are trying to get their programs diversified and to not offer certain types of programs. But the problem for people who come here is there doesn’t seem to be all that much choice on top of that. There’s some students that say, “If I go to film school in the U.S., I’ll do just fine so long as film school is a part of the program.” And then they find themselves working a part-time job and then they’re stuck.
Do you find a lot of students who don’t want to go to film school or they do it anyway, and their careers go badly later if they don’t go to film school?
I’m very confident in saying that, based on interviews I have had, and the people I have met at film school, they aren’t particularly interested in film as a whole. They’re interested in particular things and they do things very differently depending on the program. Some students, it gets in the way of their studies, but, generally, most of my students are interested in a broad set of media. They’re doing media studies, they’re doing media criticism, they’re doing documentary, they’re doing TV writing, they’re doing literary analysis, they’re doing things like that. If you don’t have a specific interest in some subset of media, I don’t know where you have any hope of actually getting into this field. They may have a very specific course in cinema theory that’s important, but I think most people aren’t that focused in that area.
Is it true that you can’t get a master’s in film history at USC?
No, but I think it’s possible to get the Master’s in film at San Francisco State or USC, and with a lot of difficulty. I think that they’re very selective on that. We’re very selective to start with and they’re very selective on the people who want to get there, so there’s a very competitive process. There’s also a really important program called the Master Film Program, which is an interdisciplinary program of four years.
Do people come in expecting to work in Hollywood and do some work that might be very commercial? What are the things that they find if they do get hired?
