In this world, I try to have a sense of humor about it, and the idea of trying to do some of these things with the movie is really funny to think about – not just because they’ve been done so many times, but because these filmmakers have made these films so many times that I thought it was a good way to introduce some of the things I really think the movies ought to be.

In fact, one of the first things I wanted to get into the movie was a lot of the filmmaking theory stuff that I think a lot of filmmakers get stuck in their heads. They tend to talk a lot about what’s really important to them as a filmmaker. Sometimes that’s how they end up doing their own thing, sometimes that’s what they want to be in the industry, or at least want to do. There are plenty of other filmmakers that have a similar philosophy and want to make something and say, “I really think that this is an interesting direction for my filmmaking. It’s going to be something I want to work in if I ever get to go into another kind of medium.”
Do you still have a lot of your old footage from the early days of The Blair Witch Project? Or are you focusing on the first film and making a more streamlined version?
No. I definitely don’t. It’s kind of hard to get footage from that time period. I’m actually still working on that first film, so in a sense, it’s like trying to get new footage from it. Sometimes I’ll send a picture of a bunch of people that are shooting with me, but we’ve never done that.
What I’ve been working on is trying to make something that’s kind of like a movie where the audience can feel connected. It’s not too much of a film, but it’s about this world that is more or less the same, but with some new characters and interesting things going on in it.
When you look at film now, do you agree with the idea that it’s very important to have a sense of humor about all of it?
I don’t find it funny anymore. I don’t love anything about the word humor, but I do know it is something that can be used to make interesting and interesting and interesting films.
