This is probably the biggest question I can answer with any degree of certainty. Sure, it’s hard to get away from film when there are no audiences to pay to see your movies, but it’s easier to turn a profit on television. You get to choose the money that you want to make. I’m a TV producer. And, I’m very fortunate to have access to huge amounts of money.
What’s so wonderful about television is it allows you to make great stories that you want to make. It gives you control of what happens, which is great. I can make whatever I want, when I want, where I want it, with any number of actors. I also have an obligation from a marketing standpoint because you’re selling to people who are willing to pay for it.
Do you ever feel like you’re selling more than movies?
To some degree, yes. And that’s why, for me, I’m not the most concerned person when it comes to movies. A feature film would be the first time I felt I might actually make money on my own. I had no idea at all how successful I would be in a feature film. I was a little panicked. I think maybe, when you’re in college and you’re having so much fun as an actor, you want to spend time with friends. I’m not a social person. So, my time with friends was going to be mostly in the bedroom. [Laughs.]
It also had to be easy to do it, because you’re basically spending every day in the movie theater and in one thing or another, you’re always in the studio. And, no one’s going to really want to work for you or pay you.
On the television side, if you do have a great story, there are networks that will air the show. And, sometimes, they’re going to take a chance. There’s always the risk that it might not sell for a lot of money. It’s still really important to have great relationships with your producers and directors and actors. I think of my TV partners as partners in crime. But, I also just love the process and the work. I do enjoy it every day. But, on a personal level, I think a film or television show is something people would rather do than spend a lot of time in front of the television.
