When you’re in the film industry, you’re competing against a lot of people. A lot of times, they can afford to be able to hire a guy or girl that they can get on the road with and they don’t have to hire a lot of assistants.
What are the differences between editing and post production (i.e. post-production is more technically involved, and it requires multiple editors)?
If you’re doing an assignment, and you’re going to have a camera that’s going to film everything that’s going on, then you’re going to have a lot more editing going on than in the beginning when you’re going off in a direction with a camera that’s a little bit different. At the beginning you only need to cut something that’s not a really large group, you only need to cut a very small bit, you can go off into whatever direction you want to go. You never really have that level of work with an assignment.
What’s the average salary for an editor?
The median is around $75,000 and it fluctuates. It depends on the industry, but from everything I’ve seen, it’s more than what you would get as a production assistant, which is about $40,000 in New York City. That’s a lot of money.
In what ways has editing changed since The Sopranos aired?

In the beginning, you just do some pre-production stuff and it’s a lot more on the surface. In the last four years, I don’t know what it’s going to be like, but now the pre-production is going to be at least three weeks more than it was before. You’ll be making several hundred thousand of dollars.
How do you get your money?
As a editor you have to pay your taxes and you pay your health insurance. You’re working full time. You’re also contributing something to the economy, you don’t have to work in a factory. That’s kind of the best thing about it, the economic benefit that it gives you.
