I don’t believe in one definition. I believe people are individuals with diverse backgrounds, talents, and abilities. However, in order to do better work, we all need to have at least one standard of quality. When you decide to accept paid assignments, be sure you are going to a studio that is not only reliable but also does not let up on their commitment to quality. It is easier and more rewarding if you know studios will put out good work rather than one that stops making work. You want things to come out as good as you can.
So, what should I do when I do not like the quality of work I receive from a client? There are a lot of things to consider when deciding to accept paid assignments. You should first look to see if there is a way that you can reduce your risk. How do you know, when someone is not going to deliver the work? If you have a well established relationship with the studio, I wouldn’t ask about a payment. You might have received a good deal, but the studio is not going to pay you in the foreseeable future.
You may not know the studio where the work will be done. Most studios will list the type of work they offer from multiple artists, so you’ll know if the quality is acceptable. The easiest way to know if what you receive is the “worst” is to see how long it runs before you see an improvement. Sometimes it takes weeks or months before the quality improves—how do you know how to handle that?
So do you know if you can charge for the work you are commissioned to complete? If the studio is well established, you most likely cannot. Do not accept a job unless you have an established professional relationship.
