We want people who like working with their hands and who like to create.
When I started, a director’s most important skill set was how to work independently. Now I think that a director needs some of the following (these are all what I’d be willing to teach):
* Having good self-direction (e.g. knowing your audience and your job as a director)
* Knowing the art of editing together
* Being a good storyteller and good communicator
* Being a good leader
* A sense of the “big picture”
* Being able to work on a short time scale
* Understanding the differences in storytelling styles and the importance of having different perspectives
* Being able to communicate a vision of the project you are involved with
* Being able to create effective visual images

In the past, I have spoken a lot about the fact that in the past, more people were incarcerated on marijuana charges. In 2011 there were 8,742 persons booked in California for “Cannabis Offense” out of a California that is 8,800,000+ population. That is 3% of the population and roughly 2% of the adult population. In other words, there were more marijuana convictions than there were adults for the majority of the population.
However, as the percentage of drug arrests decrease, as the disparity is reduced and marijuana is legalized and regulated, as more Americans decide to abstain from consuming, there are more people in prison.
Of the 7,300,000 Californians arrested for marijuana in 2011, the vast majority were for simple possession alone, despite the massive increase in arrests in terms of sheer marijuana possession arrests, and despite a large shift in the balance of power between California and the federal government.
There were about 30,000,000 people in California convicted of simple possession in 2011, in spite of the fact that approximately 80% of people in California convicted had drug possession convictions of some kind prior to entering the criminal justice system. Of that 30,000,000, a great majority of them were for drug possession alone. In other words, many of those arrested for simple possession were not even guilty. That is what all of this statistics is about.
