“I would say the most successful actor [at this], obviously, is Leonardo DiCaprio. Everyone else I would put in that top five in terms of earning. He comes in at sixth, at least, with a gross of $2.68 million.”
5. Who do you see as an underdog this year? “I think people might be surprised. It will be another movie that comes from a genre that’s been dormant, but is being revived. There are people that people might not realize were at the top of their game all along, which is a shame. I do believe that there is a lot of potential there. The real question is, can you make a compelling narrative that makes people really want to see it? It took an unknown actor [James Gandolfini in the last one] and put him in the best position. He is still a lot to figure out.”
6. What else did you look forward to this year? “All the movies that we had never seen before were amazing, and all the movies that we had seen that everybody thought were great, were not quite as good as anybody thought them to be. It made me very happy that this year was a very unique year. We had the opportunity to see all these movies that were really incredible, that are so beautiful. I mean, I can’t wait to see them again sometime.
“But the movies that we’re really excited about are films that have always been on my list but I’ve only seen or read about once or twice, I just had a chance to see them, so they’ll be awesome.”
7. Any surprises that we’ll see this year? “I didn’t really take stock of where we left off in the year so far. I think most of our fans and our fans that keep asking us about this year — I’ll say this: I don’t think that I know that many people who’ve kept track at all of what’s going on in movies. That’s what we’re looking forward to this year, because now that we’ve seen a little bit of the past that we haven’t yet seen, and now that we’re able to see some of the movies where we’ve had a lot of advance access to it, we can really watch and see what we really thought and what we really think will work. That’s what we’re most excited about the year,” said Abrams.
