For most video editing jobs, a camera is a valuable commodity. At the most professional levels, you’re probably doing at least some video editing every day. It’s easy to understand the impulse that goes with a lot of video editing. The more you do, the better you will look. It’s hard to imagine many people not jumping to this decision, especially if they’re trying to make something “better.” But there’s actually a problem with video editing, one that you most likely know about but rarely think about: the cost of footage goes way beyond the amount of dollars you were actually paid for it, and goes way too far beyond the number of hours involved in the editing, and is simply inhumane.
The price of footage is, and always was, one of the most important factors in whether a video editor makes money or not. But this is not the case now in the video-production industry. Video editing is becoming more and more expensive, while the video-editing workflow is improving by leaps and bounds. But why is that? How is it possible that so much of today’s digital videography still looks like it was made by a man in a basement 20 years ago, and not just because of an increase in computer horsepower but a massive increase in the ability to edit in the digital era?
The answer is because of two factors:
