Why is it called indie? – Community Documentary Filmmaking Redux Gta V

There was no reason, except for “because we want to”.

“What do you mean, ‘because we want to’? You told them they could have it the old-fashioned way, that’s all”.

“Yeah, that would be our way.”

“Well, the first order I want is to be a bit more lenient. We want the first person in the room to be in control of where their money goes. The money for the indie label comes out of your check when they take their cut, it also means you are putting your own stamp on it. When we start accepting applications, I don’t want to create a new division of labour. I want my label to just operate as a normal record label.”

“So there’s lots of things that might not have happened. All I can say to you is your application is being considered. The first thing we’ll consider is whether the money is going to work out. A lot of artists have been burned before. But that’s not the point, you can’t spend all your time trying to keep that money going, you have to make a decision. You may have to make the choice between taking a hit in revenue, or making a really good record, or both.”

“But that doesn’t mean that those artists are going to be able to take that money, do it through an indie label, and spend it on their art. The answer is no. Because, at the end of the day, that’s one of the things that we’re really trying to do, is try to help make an indie label a viable model.”

“We want to protect indie labels.”

“Right. But that does not mean we’re going to take away your rights to play music on an indie label.”

“Why does that matter to you?”

“Right, because this label is going to be for you.”

What role, if any, do you think independent labels will play in the years to come? Will indie labels become a way of avoiding paying the bills that would otherwise go to the major labels?

“Yeah, I think you’ll see more of that in the coming years because the indie label model, to us, has become synonymous with free music. In a way we didn’t do anything wrong. But in a perfect world, we would have got on the same table as the major labels and tried to find a balance between getting our music to people who need it
