MORRIS COUNTY, MI – If you didn’t know the story of how a homeless man saved up money to buy a gun and use it to protect himself and his family, here it is for you: a man who was homeless after Hurricane Katrina decided to give his life to help other people.
Michael Stegemeyer was one of hundreds who sought shelter at a church in Morris County on June 29, 2005. That’s where he received a phone call from a neighbor and his story made the national media.
About one time he had a thought. “I said, ‘If I could find some people who are homeless like me in the neighborhood I know, I would be able to do some good to them. I would be able to get them into my house,’ And I said that to him and he said, ‘All right,'” Stegemeyer said.
Saying ‘All right’ is a key phrase here because there is no other way to start a conversation about someone who is homeless to someone who knows him from Morris County.
Before that Friday, Stegemeyer was living in tents and sleeping on the street in Midland. He had been doing street work with a homeless charity since about 2005.
He went outside to ask the man who lives across the street if he was willing to help him.
“We met two minutes ago and I gave him the money and he took off and he left me, I gave him the money and the other man took off and I couldn’t do nothing else,” Stegemeyer said.
He called the man’s cellphone and asked him on his cell phone if there was someone who could help him because he was going to need the $5,000.
The call that saved Stegemeyer’s life came through. Stegemeyer and the man called each other and talked about life in the street.
The money was a big help to Stegemeyer and he was able to open a bank account with the money and buy a gun.
