The simple answer to that question is, No. In truth, I think it’s just easier to play your guitar on a keyboard than it is to play it on a string bass. I’m really good at playing guitar on a piano, for example, and I think that’s a big part of the reason I’m good at it. But I think it’s not a huge factor. If you ask people to choose one instrument among the 10 to 15,000 in existence, the guitar wins hands down.
So guitar lessons and music education are not that effective?
No, not really. It can feel like the other things people do in life are really important–doing your taxes, being productive. It is, for sure, a little more complicated than just paying attention to the music. There are other ways to go about it. Sometimes I write songs and put lyrics on it. If a teacher or a musician can actually give me advice like I want it, it can be really helpful. I don’t really know how they work in other fields though.
How did you begin playing music?
Around age 6. After that, it took time. I would play in bands, but it is something I always wanted to do so I didn’t just pick this hobby up with no intention of practicing at them. It is, however, something that I really enjoy doing and that can help to get me through the day. But I wouldn’t call myself a musician by any means. Like a painter. This is more of an “excuse” though, in a way. I have a lot of musical talent and I guess I can call it a gift that can be used for a lot of different things. It’s good that I can play the saxophone, to play on a rhythm guitar, to play in a band, but I honestly think if you put it all together, you can build a much better piano player than this, because what I need for a piano is more practice.
How do your parents and siblings feel about your hobby?
I think most of them are okay with it–some a little upset because they have never been exposed to it, but most are happy about it. They have kids of their own and so they see the positives in it–I guess I probably get their approval in a way. There’s definitely a lot more to playing a musical instrument–it’s probably very much better than watching TV or playing video games or doing something else more relaxing.
