Or a piano?” – and my response is: “Yes, it’s OK. Start with a electric guitar. That is the only electric guitar I use in songs like ‘When You Were Young’. It’s the only electric guitar. I play it very softly and slowly, in a way that sounds like it’s coming from nowhere. I use a guitar as the main device. Then I bring the other instrument – the bass, the kick and everything else – into effect.
“I am an electric blues guitar player. When I’m in the middle of an instrumental blues, I start using my electric guitar. The guitar starts playing very softly, and it’s still there, and I play slowly, with the electric guitar. There is no difference. All it means is that the guitar becomes quiet and goes back to normal, but before that happens, when it is being played, it’s not playing very loudly, so the bass, the kick and the rest of the instruments start to come into it.
“The reason I use the acoustic guitar is because I’m not used to it – I can’t play on an acoustic, or a piano. I get out of my comfort zone. When I play acoustic blues guitar, it sounds different than when I play electric blues guitar.
“I play electric blues guitar because I want to be able to play on every one of these instruments, but I’m not used to it. I’m not used to being in the middle of an acoustic guitar. And I’m not used to trying to be loud on an acoustic.”
And so the bass-heavy version of ‘When You Were Young’ is about the same thing as ‘The Road Goes Ever On’, but with a few guitar strings thrown in. There are a few other things I like about this song, though.
Firstly, it’s a nice little break. There are four guitar lines in ‘When You Were Young’ which seem to be about going through a similar experience. ‘The road goes ever on’ goes like so: “It’ll take more and more years/You gotta take the risk/Don’t let go.” ‘The road goes ever on’ goes: “But you’re young; your time will come/And it’s okay because you’re young…”

And so it seems there are more songs that are based around the idea of taking a risk or a ‘go big or go home’ kind of attitude towards life. It’s a concept very similar to that of ‘Laz
