You could become a musician at age 30.
I’m lucky. I got to the stage where my skills are starting to come into play and I’m making music. The idea of trying to play music is a dream of mine for a very long time. My father took me to the band that was going to put out a record called “No, No, No, No” at age 19 or 20 and I was one of the people there.
You grew up listening to music and you made friends with musicians. Can you learn guitar at 30? Or did you get to 30 because it’s just what you did the first four days of school?
Absolutely. I’ve been doing guitar since I was 10 and I started playing after I lost my voice when I was 5. I think because I had a natural talent, I can still play guitar now. I’m doing it well and doing it faster than some of my peers.
I don’t think learning music is the same for everyone, whether it’s 30 or 50. Everyone has their personal experience, but it’ll all just feel good once you get there.
What kind of advice would you give to someone who got to 30 while being a musician?
My advice would be to do everything you can to get back to your childhood.
I’m fortunate to have gotten there now in the career I’ve had. I was never really looking to break out, so I went through a number of different things before the right place finally found me; and then that’s what I’m really excited about.
And then there was just learning to make my own music that was the fun part for me. Being a musician in my personal life isn’t nearly as fulfilling as it is when I’m onstage in front of people.
Did you ever consider going into film soundtracks, like Chris Marker’s The Empire Strikes Back or John Williams’ The Star Wars score? How did you feel about the film soundtracks back then compared to what you think of as the “golden age” of film soundtracks today?
I don’t think anything in particular, or even in music, is a career. It all stems from you, and who you are.
I’d be more comfortable in a studio, performing on a project. I’d get there and then I’d have to ask permission, and if I
