In this day of rapid technological development, it’s tempting to think that you have an “older” mind than your younger classmates, who’ve been doing the same thing your whole life. But if you were born around 1900, you probably have an IQ close to 100 — far behind young people today.

Here’s the truth: The younger you are, the bigger the gap between your IQ and those of your older peers.

To make things worse, older people live longer than younger people, but they’re also at a greater risk of dementia and death because the body’s aging process is accelerated, especially if they are unhealthy, such as an alcoholic or smoker. So many younger people struggle to keep up with their older peers in school, but they’ve only been doing a little bit better in adulthood.

If you’re one of the millions of people who was born around 1900, congratulations: You’re likely a genius. But if you’re like most Americans around you, you’re a good student — at least according to your schoolwork. It’s much harder to succeed on the SATs than in many other academic measures, such as college acceptance rates and the like. At the very worst, such a person must average a 22 in high school exams or more, which places her well below the average for those tested ages today. That’s not too shabby for a 23-year-old.

But if you’re actually at that age, and you know that you’re smart (even if other people believe you’re not smart), why try to pretend to be something you are not? It’s tempting to try to look at your peers for some sort of motivation: They must be in a good mood! Or, like me, they must be enjoying the time they have! Or, like I suppose, they must be feeling confident or something!

In reality, you’re likely not using these arguments to get in with your classmates. You’re not being nice to get along with those people, and your efforts are likely to be futile. You aren’t using them to gain some sort of special advantage over those other kids; you’re just trying to keep up with the guys.

So go ahead and try to pretend to have high scores on standardized tests. But if you’re doing it, do yourself and the kids around you a favor: Don’t do it to impress your parents.

And remember: the same factors that affect your intelligence also influence your social skills, too. When your friends
