I guess the most difficult instrument to learn, when I started playing guitar, was the double bass. After a while I learned how to play it and now I’m a fairly proficient player of it. I would say the hardest instrument that takes a long time to learn is a double bass. It’s more difficult than playing traditional jazz on the guitar. I’m not going to say that they’re the same kind of music. I just think they’re different. The double bass is very similar to the guitar when you play. It’s all that is missing.
Who can play guitar?
If you were to ask ten people who can play guitar what they’d describe that as the hardest instrument to learn, I’m not sure one of them would say the double bass. But if I could find ten people who can play the double bass, I think they would say the guitar. Because the guitar sounds a lot like the double bass. It takes a lot of practice to get good at the guitar. Then you have the double bass and then the banjo which is also an incredibly difficult instrument to learn. But that’s what I’d say is the toughest instruments to learn.
How does your family get along?
I’ve just been talking to my oldest son who’s now in college. And that’s all she wants to do is play guitar. She is the only one who plays it. She’s been telling me that a lot of friends and family who play guitar have left her. I guess that was a bad thing for my family that my sons were not playing guitar and going off to college.
Are you going to keep playing?
Well I don’t know. I was trying so hard to keep performing. I was playing gigs and it didn’t seem to work out. I’m playing gigs and maybe if I stopped doing them I would be fine. I hope so. I wouldn’t want to be doing the same all over again. I’d like to think that I can keep myself busy. I really believe that my music is a means of getting through to myself. I always wanted to be the same person when I started doing it. I would like to think I’m that person that you are looking for.
What music do you listen to?
I think I might be a bit of a classic rocker. I really like “Roll Over Beethoven,” which is by the Rolling Stones, “I’m So Tired.” I like a lot of classic rock
