Do you just need to be able to name chords for the first time?
Most students learn the guitar by simply playing some songs on the record. This is not a method that takes any time at all. As with any kind of music, the guitar will become “new” as time goes on. We are still practicing these songs on the record. If you are new to guitar and want to learn this way, the best way is to just do one or two practice sessions and keep repeating it to get used to the guitar. You will notice that the song seems a little short on words and that’s because we are actually trying to learn those words by hearing.
One practice session is often enough to get you to where you think you’re at. The longer you spend playing, the better you will get at it. Once you are comfortable with the guitar, take two to three practice sessions a month to make sure you are listening and paying attention to what you are doing.
Why learn the guitar?
Learning a new instrument takes a lot more than just knowing the chords on the guitar. In addition to having to do these things, it requires knowing as many things as you can about the instrument. A common mistake is to be afraid to study too much because the results (music) you end up with might actually sound better than your previous knowledge. It isn’t worth the risk. The thing you learn from music is what works. When learning a new instrument you gain a much wider range of knowledge and you get the flexibility to apply that to anything.

You learn a new instrument not by doing a lot of practice sessions but by looking at music videos on YouTube. I have been doing this for a bit now and the result with my son has been tremendous. It’s been a constant source of inspiration for him and we have been able to play more than he has been able to before!
