The hardest thing to do is to make yourself feel the emotion of the song, but you have to play it right, too. You have to get it into your head, and you have to get out of your head.
Why aren’t guitar solos as popular these days?
When people sing, the way they sing changes a great deal over the course of the song. What used to work really well, and is really the most popular way for young musicians to sing the song, it’s the way the solo comes in. You are saying the note in the solo, which is the same note that you are playing on the chord, is the same as the note in the bridge. But it’s really important so you can connect the voice with the guitar. And even though the way that you sing in the solo changes over the different chord changes or the bass line that’s happening the whole song, the voice is really connecting.
Have you had a good lesson on playing guitar?
I have not had a good lesson for playing guitar. A friend has been teaching me guitar, and we have been hanging out for a long time. I started to learn something about the whole guitar thing. He got me guitar lessons, and he showed me the things I really needed, like picking. He got me to understand what a “fretboard” is, and he gave me a guitar and told me how to pick a string and what chords make up different scales. I would say that at that stage I am not quite confident, but I am trying.
What’s the most important thing in playing a song that’s good?
When you have a song with three different chords, but all of them have a common sound, you can play every single chord and it will still sound good. The hardest thing in writing anything really is not to write something that sounds good. We all know that, we all know that the best songs are the ones that sound great, and that’s not just because they’re good. The best songs are the ones that sound great, and there is nothing that says that a person has to think about how to play them. Sometimes, I think the most important thing in writing is not the sound of the song, it’s the idea of what you’re writing about and where you’re going.
