As mentioned above, the idea that you can get a bargain here in the US is completely and utterly ludicrous. This is not the way it works in most other places in the world. In most developed countries, it is more or less illegal to charge an artist for a piece of material used. There are exceptions in some countries, e.g. France and England, but this usually covers only the majority of artists. For example, if an artist wanted to charge a large royalty for her song and her song used in a commercial, she would have to go to the French parliament, where the song must first have been approved and then, if she could prove the royalty cost was high, the song would be considered an “unauthorized use of the artist’s work.” (This is also one of the reasons that in Germany music videos are so expensive — a large portion of the cost of licensing a song must be paid directly by the performer.)
The same idea applies when you go to a foreign country. Even for countries with more liberal laws, the law does not usually require you to pay any royalties if your material is covered by copyright. The only requirement is that the copyright holder can prove that the material was not used outside of the author’s exclusive rights, and the copyright holder must prove that he or she received money for the use. You don’t even need to show that there has been a transfer of ownership. If you look at the United Kingdom, you can find this requirement in the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988 (in force at the time of writing — this law is also called the Licensing Act), under Section 17(2). The relevant section says:

A copyright holder shall be entitled to recover, from a person who has failed to comply with the provisions of section 18 of this Act in respect of a work, a fee of up to £50.
The only possible objection to this provision is that the term “fee” itself is not clearly defined. Even in UK copyright laws the term “fee” is not defined. That means that a copyright holder is entitled to recover the “fee” for a work if the artist was paid for the uses of the work and if she or it had not had the rights to use it outside of the copyright holder’s exclusive rights. This gives a license to infringers like you the right to charge up to a maximum of £50 per use – a high fee. (This penalty is different to the fines specified in Section 17(1)(
