This all depends. Guitar is all about learning rhythm, scales, and picking. And some people pick a lot and do all the stuff. Or some find they know what it feels like to play one chord over another and just use that as a basis for the next thing.
You have two options when you start out: you can learn the scales and memorize the chords or learn them and use them later, after you get some patience and get the feel for the fretboard and the fretter.
What’s your favorite way to learn a certain chord?
I’m never really sure what’s been so successful in the past, but now I definitely choose to learn in a systematic way. It gets me to the place where I want that chord, and by that I mean:
I want to get it in my head fast, so I’m not going to be thinking, “I should try this scale on the guitar,” which is a dangerous choice for just learning one chord over another. As you become more skilled, you’ll start to take the time to learn the entire chord type, whether it be a major or minor scale, the shape, etc.
What’s better for learning how to play a certain chord:
A lot of the stuff I teach is pretty standard. A lot of it, I use in my own guitar.
But then, a certain person will learn something completely different. Someone will take the time to learn the chord of that scale or to learn an entire chord that way instead. So it’s really just a combination of that person’s approach.
What do you find most interesting about your classes or lessons?
It’s so funny, I don’t think there is a definitive answer if you ask me. Like, my favorites, are the ones where the teacher is very thoughtful and has a lot of information on the guitar.
But then sometimes, it’s just me sitting down and hearing things. And when you hear a thing that was pretty unexpected, you’ll just go, “that’s so cool.”
How do you approach lessons about theory or how to practice theory? Are you a more theory-oriented teacher?
No, I am more hands-on approach (though it’s more of a problem solver approach, like reading the manual, etc.). Sometimes things are a little more complicated, but when you don’t know exactly how to go about it, it’s fine to approach things from the hands-on
