Well, in Japan it’s a very common thing. One of the things to do is buy an inexpensive guitar. In Japan, they don’t care about any kind of quality, but if it’s cheap enough – in the 1,000 yen range – they will give you a good one for the price. And that usually means they don’t have much knowledge about the guitar, so you’ll have to experiment to find out what your playing ability is. Well, the first thing you need to do in the States is go to the local guitar shop and go through the entire instrument there. The first thing you’ll do is ask them what kind of pickups they have. The first thing they’d likely say is, “Okay, you can have that, but you better have a good sound.” This is usually because all guitars are similar, anyway. So you’ll have to explain to them why you’re interested in this instrument. Then you might be asked to pick one of the models. Usually the first choice they’ll give you is the Les Paul, because you’ve seen a lot of rock bands play that guitar. Most probably, you’ll hear the same sound coming out of it. You can go with any instrument you want – a jazz guitar, an acoustic guitar, or an electric guitar. Of course, the more expensive one will have more features – more pickups, for example (which you can also get by buying an expensive guitar) – but this isn’t the point.
