The number of jobs in the American solar industry declined more than expected in the third quarter.
The solar installation sector has been particularly weak on Wall Street with solar-panel-makers struggling to meet investor demands.
The number of jobs fell to 14,200 in the last 3 months compared with 17,750 the first three months of the year. Solar prices have fallen over 60 percent in the past year to less than $40 per watt, bringing the cost of production down to under $10 per watt.
Overall, U.S. electric grid power systems are expected to generate about 636 million kilowatt-hours in 2013, down from about 728 million in 2012, according to the American Society of Civil Engineers.
The industry has shown signs of revival, with a growing number of new projects under construction, including the $3.2 billion Crescent Dunes solar complex in Nevada. In June, the Solar Energy Industries Association reported that 5,000 new projects were scheduled to come online and by the end of the year, 8,000.
“The big thing we’ve been seeing is a growing interest in the industry,” says Bill Hughes, CEO of Sunrun, a venture-backed solar installer founded in 2000.
He adds that it was especially important in the 3rd quarter to keep improving the competitiveness of solar projects – in particular, the pricing of panels – rather than focusing on cost and capacity.
