When she was 7 years old, Jennifer McElroy discovered that a certain kind of bird had flown into her life.
It turned out to be an extremely common, common bird called parrots. Over decades, thousands of parrots have been stolen from their homes and stolen from the streets in the US alone.
Since 2002, Jennifer has been tracking the whereabouts and condition of parrots throughout their natural homes. The project has brought together a team of volunteers who travel from New York to Florida, tracking the birds via satellite and video to make sure they are OK.
“No one owns a parrot,” said McElroy. “We have rescued lots of those birds from places like the streets, where we know they are likely to come into contact with people and predators. But no one’s ever found them, because we don’t know if they’re safe.”
As part of the project, they work with the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) to provide information and help identify parrots.
They also use footage captured by the WCS’ PredatorCam to aid in their efforts to find parrots. During the study, which started in September 2011, Jennifer and a team of volunteers spotted over 1,700 parrots.

“We’re getting a lot of photos,” she said. “But we’re not getting good, accurate information.”
Because of this, the team has had to take more proactive measures to find the parrots. They have also used high-frequency GPS transmitters to help find out where the birds are.
On a particularly hot summer’s day, Jennifer and the team would take a GPS tracking device to locations where they think parrots might be hiding. This way, the team has a record of where the parrots are and are searching for potential locations.
“We can’t stop going looking – we only have limited resources, both geographically and chronologically,” said McElroy. “But we’re doing our hardest, and we hope to get some good news from some of these guys soon.”
They hope the parrots will be able to escape capture.
