There are a lot of songs out there and to answer this, I like to imagine that there were a wide range of things that could not hold their own on the charts, because they would be completely boring without a story or a twist. Most of us, we like to be able to take ourselves seriously. When I first started playing guitar, I was like, “Oh, I’d just like to do a guitar solo on a song and it’d be pretty neat.” But, after awhile, I realized that I was just playing the music to get people excited. As I got older, I realized that I just needed an excuse to play and play. So that’s what I did. So if someone really likes the tune, it’s not like I’m going to pull it from somewhere else. It just makes you work a little harder — it’s harder not to like it.
What is the worst guitar riff?
I was playing in Nashville’s Whiskey Tango Foxtrot when I was 15 or 16 or something. It’s just this weird thing that everyone who ever heard me sing in my youth had to say, but I didn’t care. I liked it. I thought it was pretty cool, and I played really well. I thought it worked.
If you could have one guitar player in any genre, who would it be?
I’d like to have a guitar player of any kind, any instrument. [Laughs] A bass player. That’s probably not going to change my life.
What’s the biggest misconception about rock music?
People think if they buy a big-ass guitar, they get all sorts of crazy stuff. You got to be realistic. I’m sure when I was younger, I thought, “If I bought a guitar, I’ll make it sound like Bruce Springsteen.” I think I learned that from my dad. If you buy something like that, like an Ampeg Mustang or something, you’re like, “Oh, yeah, that’s my dream guitar right there.” But in many ways, I think it’s a great way of finding out what’s a really great guitar. There are guitars that sound great but don’t really do anything. Or, you think, “Okay, I’ve got this thing, but where is the punch?” Or it’s not really the best way for the guitar player to interact with them. For me, I want to listen to guitars I like.
