As a teacher, I am not aware of anyone that has to teach someone who is 19 years old or more. But if that doesn’t qualify them to learn guitar, I don’t know what does. I am not sure how to explain this, except to say that it is very different than a 21 year old. If you are a 19 year old, why should you be teaching someone who is much older than you when you are the one who cares about your safety.
When was the last time you ever had to teach someone who was 19 years old?
The last time I taught a 19 year old was when was a teacher with another teacher in my class. There was a boy who, when he was 8 or 9 or 10 years old, we learned to play guitar in his first song. I remember the song was just one that started off “I Love It Here” by Led Zeppelin. I taught him some of the chords and some of the guitar parts to get him started, but as a teacher I learned a little bit from every one of those boys. If I do that now, when was the last time I taught someone 19 years old? I never taught any other 13 year old in my classroom. I know that I have taught many other young men and women as well.
Can you talk about the reasons why you have been teaching guitar for so long now?
I’ve been teaching for about 30 years, mostly since 1968. That’s the year I taught myself to play guitar. I have been teaching for almost two decades, which means I have seen many changes.
When did you first learn to play guitar? What instrument was it in school?
I was born in 1944, so it was before I got into it with any other instrument. My first instrument was something called a guitar. I grew up in a very strict Catholic home. I played in a youth band and was in school when I was about 9 years old.
Was the first time you learned to play guitar in music school?
I did, but I just got into it after I was in high school. My instructor was my music teacher at Catholic High School. The music teacher had been playing guitar for years until he graduated from high school and had been able to teach it to other kids. I remember he taught me how to play guitar for about 5 weeks and that was that. I just used to play in the band and he didn’t ever call me the guitar player.
