After weeks of speculation, a top-secret, $2 billion plan to transform the White House into a huge and powerful private space museum emerged this week.
The Space Exploration Technologies Corporation, known by its initials, SpaceX, plans to construct a massive museum in partnership with Virginia-based private space tourism provider, Virgin Galactic. The museum would sit above the White House and include interactive exhibits that would inspire visitors to learn about the origins of what we know today as the US government.
For now, those plans seem as far off as ever. But a team of NASA, National Aeronautics and Space Administration, and Department of Energy representatives recently began planning how it would work.
The project, which we first reported on a few years ago, has evolved over the past three years as NASA officials began to evaluate the best course of action for the Space Launch System (SLS), the next-generation rocket being developed by NASA for manned missions beyond the moon.
Now, the first big step toward building the museum has begun. NASA and the DOE have asked the Smithsonian Institution to consider partnering.
The first step in any museum project is getting the word out, of course. Space Museum is the first spaceflight museum ever. Not only that, it’s the first to be managed entirely within NASA’s bureaucracy. Space Launch Systems is currently under the purview of the Air Force, but the Smithsonian could potentially be selected if NASA chooses to do so.
As the story goes, the Space Exploration Museum was founded for the purpose of “exploring the history of spaceflight.” The idea is to showcase “the history of flight and its impact on our culture, economy, and society,” in the hopes of inspiring future visitors to join in the exploration of our solar system, our solar system’s nearest neighbor, and beyond.
The Museum is one of dozens of space exploration museums that will soon be opening up across the country to show visitors the amazing experiences that life in outer space can offer.
