As you’ve already noticed, the most common guitar chords are in the 7th, 9th, and 11th (or 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9), but there are a few more as well. Here’s a quick video that demonstrates each chord type as it’s used in all of the songs on the above list:
7th Chords – 7th chord chord shape. It generally consists of two notes (A, B) stacked together on one string and one note (B) on the other string.
12th Chords – 12th chord chord shape. It consists of three notes on one string and four notes on the other string.
13th Chords – 13th chord chord shape. It consists of two notes on one string, two notes on the other string, and an even number of notes on the first string:
8th Chords – 8th chord chord shape. It consists of one note on one string, two notes on the other and an even number of notes
12th Chords – 12th chord chord shape. It consists of one note on the second string, four notes on the third string, and three notes on the fourth string.
13th Chords – 13th chord chord shape. It consists of two notes on the second string, three notes on the third string, and an even number of notes.
So, how do I choose which guitar chord to use? In general, I take one key shape as my template (e.g. “Bb” = Bb major chord), and then apply the following guidelines to that shape as it relates to which of the above guitar chord types I’m in (e.g. “A C#/C” = Major chord or “Bb” = 7th chord):
If it sounds really good. If two of the notes are different and don’t match up with other notes in the key, I probably should stick with that chord (I won’t count this as 2+2, but if you want to include it, feel free, it makes the rest of this step a lot easier).
If it doesn’t sound too good. If the key feels more or less too easy when one of the notes is different, I might start using a different shape.
As always, if the key is too difficult for me, I might skip out on it altogether.
