Chord-wise, I started with the chords of the major chord (I, IV, I). The major chord is also known as the root, I, II, V, I. The I-vi-ii chord progression in most jazz guitar standards would look like this:

If you’re still having trouble remembering the chords by ear, it’s best to focus on practicing with a friend who can assist you in reading and remembering the progression.
3) How to play my new chord progressions with your backing instrument, or the chord changes without it?
One way to hear and memorize these chords is to use piano. It’s an incredibly versatile and flexible instrument, and since I’m learning to play on guitar (rather than using a keyboard as before), I’m going to be using piano to practice my new chords. Playing piano can be a bit more difficult initially, but if you stick with it with the basic chords, I promise to be able to make it easier.
If you don’t have a piano, you can use digital pianos and other “soft” keyboards, such as electronic pianos. To practice your new chords, I recommend moving away as much as possible from the piano itself. Instead, pick a different backing instrument to play along with the chord progression – and use it to fill in the missing details.
For instance, you can play along with “I” for the major-chord progression on a saxophone or any other acoustic style instrument, and you can use the same chords for some of the minor-chord progressions on your guitar.
